There are nine
Essential Features of "Universal PBS" (the
bottom portion of the PBS pyramid). This page focuses on
the first eight, as these Essential Features can be implemented universally
in all non-classroom settings without the ninth EF.
Classroom PBS is the ninth Essential Feature and has it's own separate
section on this web page because of the complexity of
implementation in that setting.
Columbia Public Schools has focused on
implementation with integrity of the first eight
"Universal"
Essential Features of Positive Behavior Support in
non-classroom settings. During the 2005-2006 school year
particular attention was paid to commitment, team process,
communication, data and defining expectations. During the
2006-2007 school year particular attention was paid to directly
teaching social skills with integrity and providing frequent,
positive feedback to students that was both specific, to the
behavior observed and contingent to meeting the standard of the
desired behavior.
