Humanities is a wise choice for students interested in a full spectrum of fine arts offered in an award-winning curriculum. The course is a Fine Art elective offered to sophomores, juniors, and seniors at Hickman and Rock Bridge High School. Humanities students gain a better understanding of self in relation to cultures past and present.

Some of the more popular activities and learning experiences during the course are:

-Field trips to local art galleries and studios, St. Louis City Art Museum, Islamic Center of Central Missouri, Hillel Foundation and Stephens Chapel in Columbia, and an architecture treasure hunt in downtown Columbia

-Studies of various painters including DaVinci, Michelangelo, El Greco, Van Gogh, Mary Cassatt, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Henry O. Tanner, Pablo Picasso, and Georges Seurat

-Studies of the compositions of various classical and modern composers including Mussorgsky, Ravel, Beethoven, Debussy, Gershwin, Brubeck, and Cage

-Studies of popular music and lyrics of the 1950's-1990's

-Greek unit which relates the culture and history of ancient Athens to modern theater, architecture, sculpture, and philosophy

-Comparative religions unit which features guest speakers on Hinduism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and Buddhism
This unique course has received an award for excellence from the National Council of Teachers of English. While Humanities is especially valuable as college preparation, it can also be an excellent preparation for a lifetime appreciation of the arts.

To enroll in Humanities at either Hickman or Rock Bridge, place the course code 898 in the code number column of your registration form.
