Humanities is
a wise choice for students interested in a full spectrum of fine arts
offered in an award-winning curriculum. The course is a Fine Art elective
offered to sophomores, juniors, and seniors at Hickman and Rock Bridge
High School. Humanities students gain a better understanding of self
in relation to cultures past and present.
Some of the more popular activities and learning experiences during
the course are: |

-Field trips to local art galleries and studios, St. Louis City Art
Museum, Islamic Center of Central Missouri, Hillel Foundation and
Stephens Chapel in Columbia, and an architecture treasure hunt in
downtown Columbia
-Studies of various painters including DaVinci, Michelangelo, El Greco,
Van Gogh, Mary Cassatt, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Henry O. Tanner,
Pablo Picasso, and Georges Seurat
-Studies of the compositions of various classical and modern composers
including Mussorgsky, Ravel, Beethoven, Debussy, Gershwin, Brubeck,
and Cage
-Studies of popular music and lyrics of the 1950's-1990's
-Greek unit which relates the culture and history of ancient Athens
to modern theater, architecture, sculpture, and philosophy
-Comparative religions unit which features guest speakers on Hinduism,
Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and Buddhism |

This unique course
has received an award for excellence from the National Council of
Teachers of English. While Humanities is especially valuable as college
preparation, it can also be an excellent preparation for a lifetime
appreciation of the arts.
