Jefferson Junior High School first opened as Columbia's high school in 1911. The "new high school" built in 1911 was converted to Jefferson Junior High School in 1927 when David H. Hickman High School opened.

The Technology Education Department at Jefferson Junior has received several Columbia Public Schools Foundation grants, including Carpe Diem and Building Intelligent Robots.
