Dear Parents ...

Thanks to all of you for sharing your ideas and feedback with us by completing our annual Parent Survey. We are continually striving to offer you the best services we can. Over ninety percent of those who responded reported that personal visits have been very helpful in providing them a chance to discuss concerns, ask questions and found them helpful in understanding how young children grow and learn. Some parents requested more personal visits each year, while other parents requested fewer each year. The State of Missouri funds Parents as Teachers and requires that programs offer 5 contacts to each family per year, two of which can be group meetings, leaving only 3 personal visits. Because of the strong support we receive from our local school district, our program is able to offer families several home visits in a year-round format.
Many of you commented on how fun and informative the group meeting and parent-child activity

events have been. Some families asked that we provide more meetings in the evening, while some families asked for us to provide more meetings during the daytime. While we do our best to provide group events at a wide variety of times and locations, we know that we will not always be able to meet each family’s individual scheduling needs. We are also limited by meeting space, as we have such wonderfully large turn outs for our meetings. You might not know that while the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education requires that PAT programs provide 10 events per year, our program offers many more events than the minimum. Did you know that we have an active teen parenting program that provides two meetings per month in each of the three high schools? We’re also proud to be able to offer monthly infant massage classes and monthly meetings for parents of infants at the Daniel Boone Regional Library (our Partner in Education). If you have not yet taken advantage of attending one of our events, you are truly missing out. Please review the calendar of events included in this issue to learn about upcoming PAT meetings we have planned for your family.
Overall, 98% of parents responded that they are very satisfied with the Parents As Teachers program. If you are a parent who feels that you and your child have benefited from participating in PAT, we would appreciate you mentioning this to your friends, family members or coworkers who have young children. Enrollment is simple: ask them to contact our office at 214-3955 or visit our website to sign up today -- www.columbia.k12.mo.us/pat
