Dear Parents ...

This issue highlights ways that parents can encourage helpful behavior in their children. Whether it’s having them take on responsibilities in the home, learning to share with others or taking care of some of their own personal needs, all of these activities can lead to the child developing a strong sense of confidence in what they are able to do for themselves and others.
This kind of positive, helpful behavior is highly valued by members of a family, friends, teachers and society in general. Parents have an awesome responsibility to set the example for their children on how to do this and why it is important. Learning these skills requires intentional support by the loving adults who surround the child.
Children are not born knowing these important social skills. They must be modeled and taught by those people that the child most admires...the parent. It may take countless times showing and reminding a child how to act in a helpful way, but before long they will do these things without always being asked. Teaching these types of behaviors takes time and patience! But the results are well worth our effort.
