Dear Parents ...

What a wonderful sight it was last night to watch so many PAT parents and young children delight in exploring all of the exciting activities at our “Down on the Farm” event held at Nifong Park. Some of the most popular activities included our small critters area as well as being able to view large farm animals in the barn. Allowing young children to explore the world of animals while having attentive adults nearby is a worthwhile endeavor.
Some of the following suggestions for exploring animals were taken from the May/June 2007 issue of Parent and Preschooler Newsletter. Whether going to the zoo or attending an event like “Down on the Farm” night, studying animals is natural for children. It can encourage them to learn about the animals themselves, as well as how to categorize, compare and contrast through observation, and it does all this while helping them develop compassion and respect for life.

Try the following activities:
Match and sort animals based on where they live: land, sea or air?

  • Match and sort animals by what types of sounds they make...which animals tweet, roar, squeak or bark?

  • Match and sort animals by color or pattern.

  •  Match and sort animals by which have wings, fins, 2 legs, 4 legs, no legs?

  •  Match and sort animals by size, shape, height.

  •  Match and sort animals by what they eat...plants? meat? insects?

  •  Match and sort animals by how fast or slow they move.
Just as each of us is unique and special, animals in all forms bring with them something unique and special to our world. Learning about animals encourages children to respect all of life’s creatures, large and small.
