Dear Parents ...

Summer is in full swing. But those of us who have visited our local stores are already seeing reminders that a new school year is fast approaching. I hope that you and your little ones have had a chance to enjoy some special summertime activities such as traveling to visit friends and family, spending more time outdoors and maybe even taking your child on their first swimming adventure! There are still some weeks left to take advantage of this special time of year and benefit from the many family friendly activities that can be enjoyed in our community.
All of these summertime experiences have the potential for giving us fond memories of time spent with those most important in our lives. This issue explores the topic of memory development in young children. It’s fascinating and sometimes frustrating to discover that what we hoped our child would remember from a special trip to the zoo turns out to be something entirely

different. I’ll never forget the drive home to Columbia from the St. Louis Zoo several years ago with my two sons. We were all discussing our favorite experiences from our day at the zoo. I expected my four year old to go on and on about the snakes and reptiles he seemed fascinated by. But when we asked Chris what his favorite memory was, he replied, “Eating the purple cotton candy”!
Consider beginning your day by asking yourself “What memories am I creating for my child today?” To make memories more permanent, end your days by telling your child a short story about their day, using them as the central character. Don’t forget to ask older toddlers and preschoolers what they remember most about their day. Who knows what funny answers you may get?
