Dear Parents ...

Recently my family and I watched a program on television that documented what life was like in a family of eighteen. Yes, two parents and sixteen biological children! My sons, both teenagers now, were fascinated by the amount of teamwork and personal responsibility every member of that family demonstrated each day.
My children’s short list of chores pales in comparison to the long list of difficult, yet character building tasks each of those children accomplish each day. I believe that children are not simply given strong self esteem from their parents. Rather, children develop their own feelings of competence and confidence from doing rather than just begin told how wonderful they are.
Family life today is very different from many years ago when having children complete daily chores was a matter of life and death. If Johnny didn’t milk the cow, the family didn’t have anything to drink. If Suzy didn’t water the garden, the vegetables dried

up and there was nothing nutritious for the family to eat. Nowadays, if Kayley forgets to pick up her blocks and Nathan doesn’t get his bed made, the consequences aren’t very significant.
However, the consequences in terms of children not developing a positive self image and not learning the value of hard work and perseverance is something most parents would consider significant.
As you know, PAT believes it’s never too early to begin to teach our children. Toddlers can throw balls into a toy bin as easily as across the room. Preschoolers can help set the table for a real family meal as easily as they can arrange their pretend play food on plates at their play table. I hope you enjoy the article in this issue that talks about “Raising Responsible Children” and that you find ways for your children to grow in their feelings of competence and confidence as they become helpers in your home.
