Introduction

Above is a bird's eye image of Oakland Park.

For thirty years this area has been a community park with a public swimming pool, 3 tennis courts, 2 sand volleyball courts, 1 basketball court, 2 playground areas, an exercise path, 2 baseball fields and 36 holes of disc golf. The park is widely used by the community and just south of Oakland Junior High School whose physical education and science teachers use the park for learning on a regular basis.

Recently, an out of town developer has offered the City $25 million to purchase the area of the park enclosed in the yellow box and build a gated retirement community. The City Council is considering this offer due to the current financial status of the city who is operating a deficit budget. Allowing the developer to purchase and develop the land would balance the budget for the current year.

The neighborhood and school are very disturbed by this action and want to convince the City Council to leave the park intact.

One day, while investigating a stream in the park, Mrs. Newton's Science class discovered that many fossils can be found in the area where the deveolper wants to build the gated retirement community. The class hopes the discovery of fossils could be important enough to convince the City Council to preserve the park. Students determined their task would be to:

  • Discover as much as possible about the natural history of the park,
  • Solicit community support for keeping the park intact,
  • Create a media exhibit of the parks natural history with compelling reasons not to sell.
