837FA JAZZ ENSEMBLE (A) (TR) - This is a class that gives students an opportunity to experience a variety of jazz styles with some emphasis on improvisation. Students must be enrolled in 8th or 9th grade band to be eligible to audition for this class and must arrange an audition with the director.  Membership in this class assumes a willingness of all members to participate in extra rehearsals and performances outside of scheduled class time, including some Saturdays.

VOCAL MUSIC

843FA CONCERT CHOIR (A) - This is an eighth and ninth grade course that provides students with a general music experience primarily from a vocal perspective.  Students will look forward to experiencing several styles of music including jazz, Broadway, pop, classical and contemporary.  Performances are required four times at quarterly school concerts.  Individual student effort toward making a positive vocal contribution to the class will be graded.  While no audition or recommendation is required for this course, it is expected that students will demonstrate a willingness to work cooperatively with others.

840FA ORCHESTRA (A) (TR) - This is open to students who play stringed instruments.  Two years previous experience is necessary.  Students are asked to furnish their own instruments.  Classes meet on alternate days.  The orchestra will perform four concerts during the year, and all students will participate in the Central Methodist College Music Festival in Fayette, Missouri.  In addition, students will have the opportunity to perform in small ensembles and solos.  Students are encouraged to enroll in the district's

844FA GIRLS ENSEMBLE (A) (TR) - This is an all-female performance choir for eighth and ninth grade girls.  Placement will be determined by audition and/or recommendation by the seventh grade music teacher.  During the year, students will experience a large variety of music styles written specifically for the female voice.  Vocal participation is expected each class period.  Some performance will include light choreography.  Performances are required throughout the year including possible contests, tours, and assemblies.

078ELA ALTERNATING EEE (A) (PR) -
This is a course designed for qualifying students in which they explore areas of talent and interest outside the regular curriculum.  Students develop as problem solvers, investigators, researchers and scholars as they pursue projects and activities.  Individual, small group and whole-class activities provide challenging and engaging opportunities for students to evolve as independent learners.  Units in philosophy, forensic science, and cultural explorations encourage cooperation, creativity and/or in-depth study.  The EEE courses are arranged for maximum flexibility so that students may schedule themselves in the course daily or on alternating days.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC ACTIVITIES

PEP BAND - This is open to all interested band students.  Rehearsals are at 7:00 a.m. beginning in November.  After personnel and repertoire are set, rehearsals will be on Mondays and Wednesdays only.  The Pep Band plays at selected home freshman basketball games and members are admitted free to the games.

CONTESTS AND FESTIVALS - Students may participate in small ensembles and solos for contest performance if they so wish.  Small ensemble rehearsals must be held outside the regular class schedule and are usually held before or after school.  The director will provide music for ensembles; student must supply music for solos.  Eighth graders may participate in the CMC Music Festival in Fayette.  Select 8th grade student MAY be invited to participate in a mixed ensemble of 8th and 9th grade students, which would also enable them to perform at the District Music Festival in Mexico, MO. 

STUDY HALLS

It is strongly recommended that all 8th graders take a daily or alternating study hall.
