What Can Slow Down Your Computer

The main causes of computers running slowly are applications and customization.  Techonolgy Services has configured Windows 7 for optimization and compatibility with our various computer models and software packages. Once you begin adding programs or making changes the computer will use more of its resources. Granted some of these changes are unintentional, which is why we have made it easy to reimage the computer and start fresh.

This is what a newly imaged computer looks like: it logs in quickly and programs run well.

This is what a slow computer looks like:

  1. There are too many shortcuts and files on the desktop.
  2. Many programs are running at once as you can see in the bottom taskbar.
  3. Unnecessary gadgets are enabled.
  4. Non-work-related software has been installed such as Winamp, Calibre and browser toolbars.
  5. A radio station is streaming from Internet Explorer using valuable bandwidth students need.
  6. A high-res desktop background has been set.
  7. The computer has been running for 9 days.

Something as simple as shutting down your computer daily will close all programs and reset the memory. Keeping the desktop clean of files and gadgets will dedicate more memory to running applications. Seemingly innocent software such as Google Earth will take up space on your computer, hog memory, and constantly check for updates which will slow down everyone’s connection to the internet. Most browser toolbars can be disabled by right-clicking on them and unchecking their checkmarks.

We understand your need for additional programs, but keep in mind the effect it will have on your computer’s performance. If you have any questions about speeding up your system and whether or not you should install a program please contact the Technology Services HelpDesk at extension 25888.
