The Yardbirds: Greatest Hits, Volume 1 |
Genre: British Rock and Roll |
Dates: 1964-1966 |
The cult of the guitar soloist was born as a result of these recordings. Who bore the axes? None other than Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and (here, only on bass) Jimmy Page. Though the most former and latter of the three have received the heaviest notoriety, it was Beck who consistently innovated—in fact, he heralded the arrival of Jimi Hendrix with the manic, forked-lightning riffs and solos he provided for "Evil Hearted You," "Heart Full of Soul," "I'm a Man," and "Train Kept A-Rollin'." The arrangements of these tunes are pretty interesting, too: if you don't happen to be excited by guitar, but, say, dig Gregorian chants the most—they've got those, too.
