X: Wild Gift

Genre: Punk

Dates: 1981

British (Sex Pistols) and New York (Ramones) punk usually get all the attention, but the American West Coast made a more than significant contribution to the genre, which, it can be argued is more influential today than the competitive brands. Where California thrashers like Black Flag, the Germs, and the Descendents lashed out against society from a yob's perspective, inarticulate, angry, borderline violent, and confused, X, spurred by the songwriting of (then) spouses John Doe and Exene Cervenka took a more specifically detailed, literate, and even traditional approach. Details: the detritus of personal relationships gone very, very wrong-as they can only go wrong in Los Angeles. Literature: the examples of Charles Bukowski, Jim Thompson, and Tom Waits. Tradition: the Chuck Berry-inspired six-string drive of Billy Zoom, the hard-hitting 4/4 of drummer D. J. Bonebrake, and the skewed Everly Brothers-cum-George 'n' Tammy harmonies of Doe and Cervenka.
