Warren Zevon : Genius - The Best of Warren Zevon

Genre: Rock

Dates: 1978-2001

One of the strangest, most intriguing, and hell-raising songwriters in rock and roll history. No one-disc set is going to do The Excitable Boy justice, but this is as close as one can get to Zevon’s essence in as compressed a form as possible. A psychologist would have a field day with what the songs say about male behavior and thinking, but, screw that—just luxuriate in the mastery of a tunesmith capable of the following lines: “...if California slides into the ocean/Like the mystics and statistics say it will/I predict this hotel will be standing/Until I pay my bill.”  If that’s too subtle for you, how ‘bout, “He took little Suzie to the junior prom/ ‘Excitable boy,’ they all said/Then he raped her and killed her/Then he took her home/ ‘Excitable boy,’ they all said/After 10 long years they let him out of the home/ ‘Excitable boy,’ they all said/Then he dug up her grave and made a cage with her bones....” Still not enough? One more try: “...I’m hiding in Honduras/I’m a desperate man/Send lawyers, guns, and money, Dad/The sh*t has hit the fan.” I am not the first to say it, but this stuff ain’t for the faint-hearted.
