Wilco: Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

Genre: Rock

Dates: 2002

One of the best albums almost never made. Reprise records dropped them promptly—the band would be resigned by Nonesuch Records (also a subsidiary of Warner)—after hearing the album. Wilco had been together 10 years before they released this alt-country classic. Jeff Tweedy, founder of the group, is one of the few rock auteurs who has realized that experimentation leads to good music (Kurt Cobain, John Lennon are among the few others) and his ideas reached a culmination with this record. This was one of the best albums of 2002, if not the best, and changed country music forever—though it doesn't sound remotely country or even alt-country.
