The Who : Who's Next

Genre: Rock

Dates: 1971

A true classic of hard rock, in which everything comes together: musicianship, songwriting, singing, sequencing, thematic coherence, dynamics, emotional range, even the album cover. Also, if you come at it with the punk attitude that it's a '70s dinosaur that needs to be destroyed, it'll cave your teeth in. Every song is great in its own way—a far rarer occurrence than is touted-but rather than comment on each, I'd rather recognize a few of my favorite things: the tension and balance between the acoustic and electric guitars, between humor and seriousness, between anger and acceptance; Keith Moon's drumming (this is his last great, sustained performance); and the unmitigated triumph of Roger Daltrey. Never the most naturally gifted of rock singers, and always embodying a blue-collar resistance to Pete Townshend's artier ambitions, he sings with intelligence, power, even delicacy here...and unleashes two screams that rank with his old mod idol James Brown's. Advice: turn up the volume.
