Wu-Tang Clan: Legend of the Wu-Tang: Wu-Tang Clan's Greatest Hits

Genre: Rap

Dates: 1993-2001

You may have heard that the Wu Tang Clan ain't nothing to fiddle with. You have heard the truth, bro. This compilation cherry-picks a run of uneven but fascinating albums; my colleague Mr. Boland says their first record (Enter the Wu Tang: 36 Chambers) is their only great one, and I wouldn't argue—that's what makes this exceptionally useful. Both grim and funny, cryptic and Kristal clear (any argument with "Cash rules everything around me"?), relentless and reflective, the Wu is always interesting, a tribute to one of hip hop's greatest producers, the RZA, so distinctive he could make a multi-artist soundtrack (2000's Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai) sound like a classic Wu Tang record. And, like very few of their peers who've been in the game as long, the group's recordings haven't dated; in fact, if you count the MCs' solo recordings, they're still making vital music (check out both of Ghostface Killah's 2006 releases, especially Fishscale, for proof).
