Willie Nelson : Stardust

Genre: Pop/Country

Dates: 1978

There is no easier way for the curious listener to introduce himself to classic American poptunes of the '30s and '40s than this little masterpiece. It's only country 'cause Willie's singing it, but it's also not that pop because it's dominated by Nelson's calm, conversational vocals and sublime acoustic guitar. Don't worry about "corn"—the new Green Day record's far cornier than George Gershwin's "Someone to Watch Over Me," which only poetically parses a universal desire, and "Moonlight in Vermont," which Willie's timing and elocution elevate to the level of Robert Frost.
