The Who : Meaty, Beaty, Big and Bouncy |
Genre: British Rock and Roll |
Dates: 1965-1969 |
The meat was in John Entwistle's thick bass lines. The beats careened from madman Keith Moon's drum kit—straining fascinatingly at the limits of control, he never lost time, and often seems to be the featured soloist. Pete Townshend's feedback drenched riffs and Roger Daltrey's street-punk “yell”ocution were as big as rock sounds could get. The bounce? Well, these British hits, despite what the above descriptions might imply, have a hookiness and joie de vivre that make their failure to tear up the charts stateside inexplicable. Themes and subjects: confusion, inarticulateness, the search for enlightenment, onanism, the struggle for self, rebellion, vision versus blindness, creepy-crawlies, generational anger, enforced androgyny. And these were pop hits!
