"We don't want the glamour, the pomp and the drums/The Dublin messiah scattering crumbs," The Mekons sang in their 1989 song, "Blow Your Tuneless Trumpet." Sad to say, but for all his good works Bono hasn't gotten any less glamourous, pompous, or messianic. Still—the pages of the rock and roll chronicles are filled with the scribblings and pronunciamentos of similar glamorous, pompous messiahs that have actually stood the test of time (do the last names Dylan, Morrison, and Ridenhour ring any bells?), and so will many of those captured here. I must admit that my short hairs still stiffen a little when the Edge strikes up "I Will Follow," "Sunday Bloody Sunday," and "New Year's Day," and, frankly, we can use a little idealism around here….
