A Tribe Called Quest: Low End Theory
Genre: Rap Dates: 1991

Part of the "Native Tongues" clique (with De La Soul, above, and the Jungle Brothers), the Tribe specialized in jazzy, Afrocentric, conscious hip-hop. Though the group never made a bad album in their 11-year run (due to their interest in jazz and funk, their music has not dated as obviously as other '90s rap), Low End is their finest, featuring stellar contributions from actual jazz bassist Ray Brown (ex-husband of Ella Fitzgerald, backbone of many great bebop recordings, and a true legend) and a young, dumb, full of fun Busta Rhymes, who cameos wildly and prophesizes the advent of ODB on "Scenario." Special attraction: Q-Tip's instantly recognizable munchkin-esque delivery, sorely missed in '07!
