In the midst of psychedelic fever and the Summer of Love, four Canadian
journeymen and their ace Arkansas drummer lit out for the territory on an album
Harry Smith (see The Anthology of American Folk Music,
below) would have appreciated. Singing good times ("Up on Cripple
Creek"), bad times ("The Night They Drove Old Dixie
Down"), and, especially, uncertain times ("Look Out, Cleveland,"
"King Harvest Has Surely Come"), they described an America whose
surface has disappeared, but whose soul contradictions are our present burden.
