Sinead O'Connor : So Far...The Best of... |
Genre: Rock |
Dates: 1987-2000 |
Another case study in how women with what we call for decency’s sake guts have to wade through more excrement than their male counterparts. O’Connor had a lot more than the instinct to make blatant and inflammatory political statements at awkward times: she was also blessed with a clear, pure, but deep singing voice, an eccentric approach to songwriting, and good taste in other folks’ tunes. This comp should have added her ace covers of Nirvana’s “All Apologies” and Cole Porter’s “You Do Something to Me,” but it still shakes an artist who makes uneven records down into something very close to a superstar. “Mandinka” still shivers the short hairs, and though she seems to have gone astray lately, she’s still young enough to become an icon before she’s through.
