| Metropolitan Music Ensemble: Stephen Foster: America's First Great Popular Songwriter | |
| Genre: Early American Pop | Dates: 1844-1864 |
American music's first popular star. His compositions live on over 150 years after the ink first dried on 'em, and though a goodly portion of adult Americans know them through Bugs Banny cartoons, artists as monumental as Ray Charles, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Randy Newman have fondly claimed them since the dawn of the rock and roll era. Also (see Emmett Miller and American Pop, below), a testament to the deep minstrel roots of our musical culture.
