Sly and the Family Stone: Greatest Hists

Genre: Rock/Funk/Soul

Dates: Late 60's - Early 70's

Though the band was the result of one man's vision, the Family Stone in many ways represented the Platonic ideal of the '60s counterculture: integrated racially and sexually, fully collaborative as creators and performers, dedicated to equality, progress, freedom, and fun, mentally philosophical and physically funky. Like most wonderful things, neither it nor the counterculture lasted; listen to there's a riot goin' on, the set that followed this hits collection, to understand why. But while it did, its sound was unbeatable: dance music for the feet, butt, heart, and head. Those musical compatriots who heard it—Miles Davis, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and a little tyke named Prince—were never the same.
