Roxanne Shante : Greatest Hits |
Genre: Rap |
Dates: 1980's - Early 1990's |
"The Queen of Rox" was rap's first female superstar. At 14, after having already tested her mettle by dissing local (male) heroes with freestyle buckshot at street parties, she waxed "Roxanne's Revenge," a very salty cut that raked hot group UTFO over the coals for being macho straw men. The song sparked 102 answer records, a legal threat from UTFO, and a legend that prevailed for nearly a decade, despite no hits (she did get a taste of #1 R&B by guesting on the notorious Rick James' "Loosey's Rap"). The lack of a hit is a shame, but understandable when you digest tracks like "Have a Nice Day," "Big Mama," and "Brothers Ain't Sh*t": the sister had a wicked, wicked tongue. She retired at 25 and ended up with a doctorate in psychology; Missy Elliott, Lil' Kim, and Foxy Brown are her grandkids, so to speak. See also The Hip Hop Box, below.
