Rolling Stones : Big Hits (High Tides and Green Grass)

Genre: Rock and Roll

Dates: Mid 1960s

If you're a dyed-in-the-wool rock and roller, you really need to own every Stones studio album (except perhaps Their Satanic Majesties' Request) up to and including 1971's Exile on Main Street. But if you don't really know who the Stones were—in 2003, that's possible, Daddy-O, and their current performances aren't exactly curiosity-instilling—here's as good a place to start as any. What one hears is the band's emergence from a world class R&B/blues/soul cover band into a creatively self-sufficient hit-making entity. You probably know "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction"—well, I wouldn't put that in the top five cuts here. The only cover is Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away," and, while it's great, it tops only the slightly dated "As Tears Go By." After you've played this CD five or six times (and I'd lay odds that won't take you a week), then move on to 1964's The Rolling Stones and start working your way towards Exile. And remember Stones Rule #31: "The only thing more pointless than a Stones greatest hits collection is a Stones live recording." (Get Yer Ya-Yas Out and Stripped barely excluded, which leaves about 25 or 30 to avoid).
