The Roots: Phrenology

Genre: Rap

Dates: 2002

Though the Philly flashes' albums are always uneven, they are also always unpredictable and risky, and this one is their best, most unpredictable, riskiest, and rockin'-est. Besides a guaranteed at least five eminently replayable jams—created, let us not forget, by a live band with the indefatigable ?estlove in the engine room—you get a poetry reading by an American master (Amiri Baraka), some winning R&B courtesy of a young diva-songwriter (Jill Scott), avant-jazz-jam weirdness, and a cameo by the most innovative post-Hendrix six-string improviser, James Blood Ulmer. The overall message: WAKE UP!
