Roxy Music : The Best of Roxy Music

Genre: Blues

Dates: 1972-1982

The perfect Roxy Music comp remains to be assembled, but this is as close as anyone’s come. It takes you through their strange evolution from glam-punks to spoiled, ironic Euro-studs to grown-up, sincere Euro-studs—though not in order, of course: the programming’s misleading, with the earlier, harder-rocking stuff (my favorite) at the end. Young fans of Brian Eno might not know he was a founding member of the group; check out the very end of the collection. Fans of Lost in Translation will be glad to know that the sad ballads are first, with that movie’s Bill Murray-karaoked “More Than This” second in line. Fans of old Dracula movies who’ve never heard the group will be thunderstruck by lead singer Bryan Ferry’s intonation, which prophesied goth. Weird, fascinating, creepy, but...romantic stuff (in more ways than one, as Lord Byron would agree if he only could).
