Robert Cray : Strong Persuader
Genre: Blues Dates: 1986

Cray's mastery is such that you may underrate him. He makes the blues sound so easy he can seem slick. But camouflaged by the ease and polish are songs (written by Cray himself and frequent collaborator Dennis Walker) of moral desperation, deep remorse, cold-blooded lust, naked weakness, and sudden betrayal. Slapping the ease upside the head is a sneaky guitar with nasty teeth. And, to be frank, blues has not moved beyond this in the near-20-year interim, if progress is your requirement.
