"Now you'll sing a song of liberty for blacks and Paks and jocks/And they'll take you from this dump you're in and stick you in a box/Then they'll take you to Cloughprior and shove you in the ground/But you'll stick your head back out and shout, 'We'll have another round!'" Thus ends "The Sickbed of Cuchullain," one of the many rousing, literate, and oddly timeless songs on this half-best-of/half-live compilation, most of them written by the legendarily drunk and toothless (but far from brainless and heartless) Shane MacGowan. This is not exactly the "ultimate" record by these Irish punk-folkers (or folk-punkers) (or whatever); that would be Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash, one of the most astounding releases of the 1980s. But it sure gets at what made them so exciting and new in a strange decade, and, indeed, it's a perfect listening companion to Frank McCourt's Angela's Ashes, even though it doesn't include Rum's "Roddy McCorley," which features in the book as well.
