Prince: The Hits, Volume 1 & 2

Genre: '80s funk and roll

Dates: late '70s - early '90s

Like Madonna (and Bruce Springsteen) (and Michael Jackson), he successfully got good music on the radio in the '80s. But he did so despite being a strange agent of dimunitive stature and indefatigable, irrepressible libido, and despite being a loyal Minnesotan who thought mixing funk and '70s rock was a good idea. His intensity, stage presence, and fountainous productivity recalled Bob Dylan, and his self-sufficiency (most of his records were sung and played completely by…him) was unparalleled. In other words, a fine American weirdo who did it—and still does it—his way. Note to parents: this is now tamer than mainstream radio.
