Patti Smith: Horses |

Genre: Surrealist Rock |
Dates: 1974 |
Are rock lyrics poetry? Seldom—and that goes for Bob Dylan, too. But Smith, along with extending the road paved by Joni Mitchell in liberating the female voice from "beauty," comes as close on this album as anyone has on purpose. Yes, she's pretentious, but her pretensions are fascinating, and she's got guts and chutzpah to burn, as the record's opening line will attest: "Jesus died/for somebody's sins/but not mine." Plus, her band'll get you over the rough spots. Recommended to lapsed Jim Morrison apostles.
