Boy oh boy, I thought I was into some deep stuff when I bought this hot off the press at 17. Played it 50 times that year, not once since. But, in retrospect, if you don't analyze the songs too thoroughly and focus on the sustained mood, concept, and guitar, The Wall is pretty impressive. Analogy: Sgt. Pepper's, another arty British concept album whose songs underwhelm when looked at out of context. If you need something to indulge a comfortably numb state of being, this might be the trick; just don't get too comfortable in its world.
