Pavement: Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain

Genre: Indie Rock

Dates: 1994

The princes of 1990s indie rock in Sonic Youth’s court. I have always called this stuff “Mensa Rock,” because, as far as sheer meaning is concerned, you have to be on the inside to get the lyrics. That elitism has never sat well with me—I like rock and roll that’s a little more democratic—but as long as the music moves, I can live with it. On this, their second full-length record, Stephen Malkmus’ melodies and wit are at a high point, and the band’s angular dynamics, unexpected tempo and volume shifts, and fetchingly untogether groove are more than enough to keep uncool outsiders occupied and entertained.
