| Otis Redding : The Otis Redding Dictionary of Soul | |
| Genre: Soul | Dates: 1966 |
It is what it says it is. Though it numbered only two of Redding's popular hits, it defined the range and possibilities of soul music, from man-alone drama ("My Lover's Prayer") to gotta-gotta-gotta showstoppers ("Try a Little Tenderness") to pop covers ("Day Tripper") to country roots ("Tennessee Waltz") to nascent funk ("Hawg for You," "I'm Sick Y'All). It didn't hurt that the singer exuded an unmatched warmth and good cheer, or that his backing band was Booker T and the MGs, the baddest soul crew in Memphis.
