The bluegrass soundtrack that took the country charts by storm and indirectly revealed widespread disillusionment with modern "country music" really isn't so bluegrass at all. If you count only one of the three versions of "Man of Constant Sorrow" (which, by the way, was originally waxed before Bill Monroe invented the genre) and assume that anything Alison Krauss puts her voice to is a little 'grassy (I would argue that), less than half the track listing is in that category. In addition, we have a classic Depression folk song (the original, uncensored version of "Big Rock Candy Mountain," a masterpiece of rural surrealism), a prison work song, a fruitless attempt to due justice to Skip James' chilling country blues "Hard Time Killing Floor," lots of ultra-pure gospel (other kinds do exist, Virginia!), and Norman Blake folking around. If I'm giving the impression I don't like it, I don't mean to; I'm just saying it's a little messy and not as monumental as its rep. But...I bought it myself simply to have constant access to "Big Rock Candy Mountain" and Dr. Ralph Stanley's update of the ancient, desperate "Oh Death," and suggest you take this home if only to hear those.
