Old 97s : Hit by a Train - Best of the Old 97s |
Genre: Alt-Country |
Dates: 1994-2008 |
Calling this band alt-country is deceptive: they are hookier than a tackle box (metaphor courtesy Brock Boland), the specificity, wit, and randiness of their lyrics put more squarely alt-country bands to shame, and they have more consistently excellent records in their portfolio than even Wilco. Some would say “they” should be changed to Rhett Miller, their main writer and singer, but they have never been better than when a solo career was just a gleam in his eye. If this rocks you, please find Too Far to Care, Fight Songs (especially), and Satellite Rides (look for the version with a bonus live disk). And look for them in Columbia—they’ve often graced us with their presence.
