Neil Young: Decade

Genre: Rock and Roll/ Folk

Dates: 1966-1977

For almost 40 years, Young has been Bob Dylan's only challenger in the field of versatile, unpredictable American songwriting. As the title says, the 2-disc set covers the first decade of his career, a period during which it can be effectively argued that he surpassed Dylan…by a considerable margin. Beyond his capacity for affecting and strange acoustic ballads ("I Am a Child," "After the Gold Rush," "Love is a Rose"), guitar extravaganzas ("Cinnamon Girl," "Down by the River," "Cowgirl in the Sand," "Cortez the Killer," "Like a Hurricane"), and angry social commentary ("Ohio," "Southern Man," "The Needle and the Damage Done"), the man could—and still does—write melodies that stick to the ribs. Young chose all of the songs here, and it's still a model for how artist compilations should be done. You can live with this for months, and neither get to the bottom of it or get tired of it. (Note: Young is supposedly still working on an 8-disc "answer" to this collection, covering the last quarter-century of his career.)
