I remember where I was when I first heard this. My wife and I were sitting in a long-time friend and fellow punkin’ head's apartment off of Green Meadows, and he asked, "You heard of Nirvana?" We said we hadn't; I'd seen the name in the trades, but it hadn't taken off yet. My buddy was in a bit of a sludge-rock mode at the time ("grunge" hadn't been coined yet), so I was apprehensive, wondering whether I'd be forced to hear the whole thing. 50 minutes later, I said, "Hit the repeat button." I've listened to it a good hundred times since, including recently, and it still sounds great. Resist reactionaries who say the group was overhyped and slag Kurt's guitar—hell, the guitar was what first grabbed me, sloppy, angry, primitive...anything BUT technically impressive, thank Elvis. They earned their legend.
