Any self-respecting rock and roll fan should have all of this band's official albums; like the Velvet Underground (see below), they sounded like a different—but equally accomplished and powerful—band on every record. If you're like me, this collection is annoying in that it offers the previously unreleased "You Know You're Right" and the studio version of "Sliver" (which didn't make the cut on Bleach or Nevermind), two of the most intense songs in Cobain's book, as blatant bait for those who already own the official albums. However, since we have limited grant money, you'll have to pardon us—after all, despite the bait, the compilers (Grohl and Noveselic?) chose pretty wisely. The best rock and roll band of the 1990s-maybe the last rock and roll band?—and perfect proof that selling millions of records doesn't necessarily mean you're lame.
