Nirvana: MTV Unplugged in New York

Genre: Rap

Dates: 1994

It's not much of an enticement to say that you can hear a man in existential agony on this recording. That doesn't sound like much fun. But you have to remember that, like John Lennon before him, part of Cobain's genius was communicating his agony in a way his audience could understand, even relate to, and, like Lennon, the raw fury of his best singing (tons of it on this record) has little competition in the history of rock and roll. In fact, I've probably played this more frequently than any of the group's other records. There's little I can tell you that you don't likely know already, but if the Meat Puppets ("Plateau," "Oh Me," "Lake of Fire"), Vaselines ("Jesus Doesn't Want Me for A Sunbeam), Bowie ("The Man Who Sold the World") and Leadbelly/Bill Monroe ("Where Did You Sleep Last Night") covers rock your world, do some research, kid. Such action would make even Kurt smile, and you will, too.
