Nat King Cole : After Midnight |
Genre: Jazz |
Dates: 1956 |
Cole’s best-known for his pop mega-hit “Mona Lisa,” and his record label, Capitol, tried its best to make it a cage for him afterwards. However, Cole was a jazz pianist before he was a Billboard icon, and an amazing one at that, and on this record, Capitol let him out for one more jazz session. What a session it is: Cole’s fingers dancing magically and swiftly over the keys, his voice seducing the listener on a choice collection of Tin Pan Alley chestnuts, and a bevy of special guests (the similarly subtle Sweets Edison on trumpet, the forgotten genius Stuff Smith on violin) trying to keep up with Cole’s lightning instincts. You may never want to hear “Mona Lisa” again.
