Minor Threat : The Complete Discography |
Genre: Hard Core Punk |
Dates: 1981-1983 |
“Don’t smoke/don’t drink/don’t f***/At least I can/F***ing think!” goes the climax of “Out of Step”: This is Puritan punk—the aural birth of the straight-edge movement. But you don’t have to meet that incredibly high standard (one lead singer Ian MacKaye has held himself to for over a quarter century, in Minor Threat and Fugazi) to appreciate—to love—the intensity, intelligence, and challenge in these 26 songs. In fact, if you listen to the tracks from the last side of their second and final record Out of Step (18-22 here), they might just have achieved something no American band of any kind has really completely succeeded at doing: an opera of sorts—about, appropriately enough, growing up. It made my hair stand on end when I was 19 and it still does.
