When I listen to the best music of the 1960s, it irks me that most of it was actually played on the radio. You could turn on your transistor, and hear great tunes, and not have to buy them! Though my 24-year-old self would have shuddered to know he would be making this comment in the future, that is what makes this collection by the Material Girl so amazing—she did that in the 1980s! Yep, the music's good, yep, they were hits, and yep, she can sing just fine (did anybody ever accuse Diana Ross when she was a Supreme?). Nope, they weren't that superficial at all, and, nope, she wasn't some corporate marketing tool like you-know-who and you-know-who (and you-know-who). These are all either extremely interesting or extremely physically compulsive records, and usually they're both, and, after all these years, they sound…even better. In the words of Rakim, she ain't no joke.
