Motorhead : No Sleep At All

Genre: Metal

Dates: 1988

What separates Motorhead (yes, they're British—but as seen with other limeys in this collection, their stateside impact has been huge) from other headbanging, hard-rocking units? Longevity: they're together a quarter-century from birth. Speed: their beats per minute consistently surpass speed-metalers; in fact, they invented the subgenre, and anticipated grunge by over a decade. Writing: besides being able to write anthems like "Ace of Spades" seemingly at will, lead singer Lemmy Kilmeister laces his songs with populist pride and defiance that an American would be proud of. Consistency: finding a bad Motorhead album is only a little easier than finding a bad Beatles album, and they've made three times as many. This powerfully-recorded live set, performed for the metal hordes of Finland, combines the cream of their early classics with the best of their mid-to-late '80s resurgence, and catches a band that has never compromised at their shredding peak.
