Modest Mouse : The Moon and Antarctica |
Genre: Alternative Rock |
Dates: 2004 |
A small act from Issaquah, Washington, playing their own loose, string-bending folk rock, Modest Mouse defined itself through Isaac Brock’s lyrics: full of nihilism, religious questioning, and abstract analogies. This combination could be satisfying, but nothing to nod one’s head to. The Moon and Antarctica is that token album where underground bands mingle their own style with a more accessible, contemporary sound. Modest Mouse succeeded (and still succeed, occasionally) at this formula. Purists would like to disown the radio-friendliness of the band’s last two albums, but “Paper Thin Walls” remains the first “Float On.” I only wish they would find a new mascot--Johnny Marr is all dried up and old.
