Madvillain : Madvillainy (MadLib + MF DOOM) |
Genre: Hip-Hop |
Dates: 2004 |
Underground hip-hop has always attracted a small but dedicated following, and ushers in new supporters when fans of rap music turn to the right MCs. This was likely a hell of a lot easier back in the ‘90s, with the genre was somewhat balanced. Now, hip hop has become diluted by recycled beats and ignorable lyrical innuendos. MF DOOM (all caps, kids) and Madlib serve as the ambassadors to refuge, a duo that have become the face of the modern underground scene. Madvillian is their secret weapon: unattractive on first listen, yet intriguing – intrigue shading to appreciation on the second – becoming one’s growing favorite on the third – addiction setting in by fourth. It’s the sound of something different: punkish hit-and-run song lengths, Madlib’s 1950s movie score samples, DOOM’s nonsensical free-associating rhymes. The bottom line is, rewards come in time, and this one has a huge upside. (Review by Jon Hadusek)
