MIA: KALA

Genre: Rap/World

If anyone is on the verge of ascending to Bob Marley’s mantle as not only a spokesperson for Third World oppression but also a master of ecstatic dance music, it is Maya Arulpragasam, better known as MIA. This record, her second, is so full of compelling and offbeat rhythms that it’s hard not to put it on repeat for the evening. What she has to say politically often requires serious critical engagement by the listener, making her one of the rare artists who can make successfully create dance music for the mind.
