artist: from gritty, ebullient Motown hit-maker

to emancipated, politically conscious auteur ("Inner City Blues"), to
multifariously seductive love man ("Let's Get It On"). There's no
ending to the story—you'll have to venture to non-Motown releases for
that, and the end is tragic—but Gaye's versatility and rhythmic mastery
will explain how he, along with Bob Marley, has continued
